OUT OF THE BOX

 ShelterBox Canada

Boxes Have Arrived in Haiti

The first ShelterBoxes have arrived in Port au Prince and hundreds more are due to arrive later today.
The ShelterBox Response Team of David Eby (US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK), who have been in Haiti's capital since Thursday, took delivery of the first ShelterBoxes at Port au Prince airport yesterday.
The team say twelve of these boxes will be used to build an emergency field hospital at the airport.
'We are helping build a field hospital with these tents at the airport,' said Mark Pearson. 'These are desperate conditions, amputations are happening every half hour. There's an urgent need for tents at hospitals and this is our first priority.'
ShelterBox Head of Operations John Leach said: 'The safety of our staff in Haiti is of paramount importance. We are working with the agencies on the ground to ensure that ShelterBoxes are not only distributed speedily and efficiently, but that our team on the ground is able to work in a safe environment.'
Hundreds more boxes are due to arrive into Port au Prince later today from Miami on a chartered aircraft. Thousands more ShelterBoxes are being packed and shipped from ShelterBox HQ in the UK.
ShelterBox Founder and CEO Tom Henderson said: 'The devastation in Haiti has moved everyone here. We now have our boxes on the ground and it's a privilege to help. The scale of devastation is huge. By the sheer grit and determination of our staff and volunteers we have been able to respond in record time. Our thanks go to the teams of volunteers, as well as to our donors, who have allowed us to do this. ShelterBox relies entirely on public donations and people's generosity. We receive no institutional funding. I'd urge, if you can, to help us.'

Public donations are vital to ShelterBox's continuing work around the world. To make a donation please call 1 800 677 0990 or go to www.shelterbox.ca to donate on line and get the latest updates on our response to the Haiti earthquake.

Our blog is being updated daily on the situation in Haiti.

Go to www.shelterboxcanada.blogspot.com, and sign on as a follower.  In these pictures you see David Eby and Wayne Robinson taking delivery of our first boxes from the Red Cross personnel. David, Wayne and Mark Pearson have been working in Haiti since Thursday  with local Rotarians to set up sites for ShelterBox deployments, and they have been "training the trainers" so once the equipment arrives it can be put up quickly and properly.

Sincerely,

Don Ohlgren

Executive Director

1000 Boxes From Canada
There will probably be over 10,000 ShelterBoxes sent within the next two weeks to Haiti.  This is the time for Canadians to step up.  We want to make sure that over 1000 of those boxes come from Canada.  You can help by donating now.  Go to www.shelterbox.ca and donate on the secure "DONATE NOW" button.  (Links below)
Or mail your larger cheques to ShelterBox Canada at our Victoria address below.  Call us at 1 800 677 0990 if you need to donate directly or have any questions.
Every little bit will help us to get over 1000 boxes from Canada.  Let's show the world how Rotary's best kept secret (ShelterBox) can really make a difference in the lives of others in times of emergency.

Canadian Government Grants (CIDA)

Yes we will qualify for participation in the Canadian Government $50,000,000.00 matching grants.  All monies we collect between now and February 12th will be eligible to apply for a matching amount.  The actual application process has not been released yet and cannot be made before the 12th of February anyway.  However, please understand the government "grants" do not come directly to ShelterBox. The government will simply put the equivalent amount into Haiti.
All money donated now will go towards Haiti relief and all money donated now should qualify under the conditions of participation.

Thank You Thank You Thank You

Never before in the history of ShelterBox Canada have we been so inundated with offers of support and financial assistance.  It makes one proud to be a Rotarian and to see how in these times of dire need for the people of Haiti that Rotary Clubs, their friends and members, Churches, schools, other service organizations, scouts and everyday Canadian Citizens are stepping up and helping out.

On behalf of the people of Haiti whom you will never know or never meet but whose lives you will save and change... Thank you..................
