The Traditional Newfoundland Dance Group

The Traditional Newfoundland Dance Group generally meets twice a month on Saturday evenings. We dance in an old, 19th century farm house that has a lovely, period style dance hall attached to it. Dan Page, owner of the property, also plays fiddle for us, and Ann Schau accompanies him on piano. Sometimes one or the other of our musicians is unavailable, and when this happens we dance to recorded traditional music from Newfoundland, such as Rufus Guinchard, Minnie White, Christine Smith, or the Tickle Harbour Band. We dance the old set dances, including The Square Dance, The Lancers, and The Goat, and we try to keep these dances as authentic and true to tradition as possible. The dances we do come from different areas of Newfoundland, such as the Burin Peninsula, The Great Northern Peninsula, Fogo Island, and others. We dance for two hours, from 8 till 10, then stop for a bit of a scoff and tea in the old kitchen. Usually we have 12 to 16 people out for each dance, and all in all, we have some fun. It's a great way to get some exercise, and to socialize with Club members. But most of all, it gives us a feeling of connection with past generations, a sense of being linked to the old people and places in Newfoundland through the old forms of Traditional Dance. Interested Dancers should contact - Woody Wilson.

"Beer and Skits" Night

Annually our Club has a "Beer and Skits" Night. The popularity of this event speaks for itself. Each year we have a sellout crowd, purchasing unreserved seating tickets months in advance. You can enjoy a Fun Filled evening with Family and Friends. As membership is not restricted to Newfoundlanders; skits are performed by Club Members, not only Newfoundlanders, but members that come from just about all Provinces in Canada and abroad. You'll have a sore belly from the laughter as you wipe your eyes to watch the rich mixture of Skit's, your heart strings will be pulled from wonderful songs, Nfld, Country/Western, Blue Grass and Rock performed by our entertaining members. The evening finishes off with a social and dance usually lasting till the wee hrs. If you are planning to be in the Victoria area in April you should plan to attend. A night you won’t regret.
